In the Carpathians, it feels like the middle of winter in the middle of April

UA NEWS 21 April 2026 11:20
In the Carpathians, it feels like the middle of winter in the middle of April

Despite it being mid-spring, harsh winter weather prevails in the highlands of the Carpathians, making it dangerous for tourists to be on the peaks.

This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Today, on Mount Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi, a significant drop in temperature, snowfall, and reduced visibility due to thick fog were recorded.

According to rescue services, the air temperature at the summit dropped to —8°C, which, combined with a north wind reaching speeds of 8 m/s, creates extremely unfavorable conditions.

The thick fog has effectively “erased” the horizon, making it significantly more difficult to navigate the terrain even for experienced hikers.

Rescuers once again emphasize that the mountains have their own rules, which often do not coincide with the calendar spring on the plains.

Tourists are strongly advised to refrain from hiking in the highlands until weather conditions stabilize, as the combination of freezing temperatures, snow, and limited visibility poses a direct threat to life.

Experts pay special attention to preparing for potential future trips.

A mandatory requirement for anyone planning a mountain route is to install the special mobile app “Rescue in the Mountains,” which allows users to quickly call for help in emergency situations.
