In Kyiv, the family of a woman who died of a stroke agreed to organ donation

In Kyiv, the family of a woman who died of a stroke agreed to organ donation

A complex organ retrieval procedure was performed at the Dobrobut Multidisciplinary Hospital in Kyiv, made possible by the compassionate decision of the deceased patient’s relatives.

The 67-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital in critical condition following a stroke; however, despite the doctors’ efforts, they were unable to save her.

After brain death was officially confirmed, the patient’s husband and daughter consented to organ donation, allowing preparations for transplantation to begin.

Thanks to this decision, three people who were on the waiting list for heart and kidney transplants received a chance at recovery.

This case was unique in Ukrainian medicine due to the complex preparation of the donor heart.

Given the woman’s age, the surgeons had doubts about the organ’s suitability, so they performed a postmortem coronary angiography and stenting of the coronary artery immediately before removal.

“In such situations, we always fight for a person’s life until the very end. And when it is no longer possible to save them, another opportunity arises—to save others,” emphasized Yelyzaveta Plechysta, transplant coordinator for the medical network.

She added that the family’s decision at such a tragic moment is a testament to extraordinary strength and humanity.

The organ retrieval (explantation) procedure was performed by joint teams of specialists from the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Kyiv Medical Center.

Before beginning the procedure, the medical staff formed a “Corridor of Honor” to honor the memory of the donor and express gratitude to her family.

“Dii” users will be able to consent to posthumous donation
