In Kyiv, a teacher was fined 3,400 UAH for speaking Russian in class

In Kyiv, a teacher at one of the capital’s high schools was fined 3,400 hryvnias for violating language laws after showing a clip from a cartoon with Russian-language audio during class.

The father of a first-grader—a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war—filed a complaint with the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language. Following an investigation, an administrative report was drawn up against the teacher; she admitted to the violation and paid the fine that same day.

The Office of the Language Ombudsman emphasized that the use of the Russian language in the educational process contradicts the requirements of the law on the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language.

On Friday, June 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law removing Russian from the list of languages protected under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in Ukraine.
