A man who kept more than 140 pythons in his basement is on trial in Krakow
The Polish prosecutor's office has filed charges against Kraków resident Krzysztof M., who set up an illegal terrarium in the basement of an apartment building. The man kept 148 snakes in cramped containers, most of which were royal pythons ranging from one to two meters in length.
The clandestine reptile operation was discovered by chance: one of the snakes managed to escape from the basement into the stairwell, where it was spotted by frightened residents of the building, who immediately called the police.

The Krakow resident is currently charged with animal cruelty, which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison. In addition, as part of a separate investigation, law enforcement agencies are examining the man’s involvement in the illegal trade of exotic animal species.
