The first case of tick-borne encephalitis this year has been confirmed in Lviv
A 59-year-old man was admitted to the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital after repeatedly finding ticks on his body during an expedition in Volyn. After the bites, he was diagnosed with tick-borne encephalitis—this is the first laboratory-confirmed case of the disease in Lviv in 2026.
According to the report, the man was participating in an expedition in the northwestern part of the Volyn region—in the Shatsk and Lyuboml districts. During the trip, he repeatedly found ticks attached to his body—on his neck, arms, legs, and around his shoulders. He removed the ticks himself, sometimes crushing them. It is noted that the man had not previously been vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis.
The first signs of the disease appeared on July 8. His temperature rose to 38.6 °C, and he developed a severe headache. His condition subsequently worsened, with the onset of pronounced weakness, dizziness, impaired coordination, and trembling hands. He was admitted to an infectious diseases hospital on July 15, where he underwent the necessary tests. Doctors later confirmed a positive diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis. The man is currently undergoing inpatient treatment.
