The Foreign Ministry explained Zaluzhny’s strong remarks regarding Ukraine’s accession to NATO
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on a statement by Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, regarding the prospects for Ukraine’s NATO membership. The ministry emphasized that his remarks were taken out of context and do not reflect the state’s official position.
“The full quote referred primarily to the JEF (Joint Expeditionary Force—ed.), not to NATO. This makes sense, since the UK is a framework nation and the leader of the JEF. As for NATO membership, this issue is handled by the Mission of Ukraine to NATO,” Tykhyi emphasized.
He noted that Ukraine’s course toward NATO membership remains unchanged. There is currently no viable alternative system of collective security.
“We are confident that there is no alternative to Ukraine’s NATO membership if the allies seek to ensure guaranteed security and peace in the Euro-Atlantic region,” Tykhyi said.
He also reiterated that a European security architecture is impossible without Ukraine. Meanwhile, the final statement of the NATO summit in Ankara emphasized that Ukraine is recognized as a “contributor to Euro-Atlantic security.”
According to RBC-Ukraine, Georgiy Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made this statement in comments to journalists.
Zaluzhny stated that he does not believe Ukraine will join NATO.
Zaluzhny commented for the first time on the appointment of the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
As a reminder, Zelenskyy confirmed Umerov’s appointment as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service.
On August 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree appointing former Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Klymenko took the helm of the NSDC after serving as head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
