Public transportation fares have been raised in Ternopil

Ternopil has introduced updated public transportation fares, which will take effect on June 13. The cost of travel for passengers will increase, though the new rules have effectively brought prices for municipal and private transportation in line.

At the same time, for certain categories of passengers, fares may remain lower or remain largely unchanged.

How have fares changed in Ternopil?

Residents and visitors to the city were informed that new public transportation fares will be introduced in Ternopil starting June 13, 2026.

The relevant decision was adopted by the executive committee of the Ternopil City Council.

It is specified that the fare is now the same for both municipal and private public transportation (according to calculations and in accordance with the approved decision).

However, the fare depends on the payment method:

  • 19 hryvnias when paying with the “Ternopil Resident Social Card” electronic ticket;

  • 23 hryvnias – when paying with a non-personalized electronic ticket;

  • 26 hryvnias – when paying with a bank card or an NFC-enabled device.

Who is eligible for discounted or free rides

According to the Ternopil City Council, students in the Ternopil community:

  • can continue to ride for free on trolleybuses and municipal buses—upon presentation of a “Ternopil Resident Social Card” in the “School Student” or “College Student” categories;

  • are eligible for a 50% discount on fares on private transport—provided they have the aforementioned cards.

In addition, free travel has been maintained for 29 categories of the population eligible for benefits:

  • pensioners;

  • people with disabilities;

  • combat veterans, etc.

Citizens were also reminded that Ternopil remains the only city in Ukraine where the “Single Ticket” service is in effect.

It allows for an unlimited number of transfers within 30 minutes between all types of public transportation—both municipal and private (buses and trolleybuses).

How to apply for the “Ternopil Resident Social Card”

As we can see, the “Ternopil Resident Social Card” allows for significant savings on transportation costs.

Ukrainians were reminded that not only city residents but also people who work or study within the community can apply for it.

You can submit an application for the “Ternopil Resident Social Card” e-ticket online via the “e-Ternopil” app.

Why the city decided to change public transit fares

Officials explained that the decision to change the fare was approved:

  • due to a significant increase in the cost of electricity, fuel and lubricants, spare parts, and components;

  • against the backdrop of rising national social standards and the minimum wage.

It is noted that the new fare was set:

  • taking into account the conclusions of experts from the Department of Transport Networks and Communications;

  • taking into account the results of an independent audit (which confirmed the accuracy of the calculations);

  • following public discussions.

"The calculations show that the economically justified cost of a single bus ride is currently 26.7 hryvnias, and 31.6 hryvnias for a trolleybus ride," the Ternopil City Council stated.

It is also noted that suggestions from community residents were taken into account during the public discussions.

Thus, following the discussions, the fare for users of the “Ternopil Resident Social Card” was reduced from the previously proposed 20 to 19 hryvnias per trip.

"This decision was made taking into account residents’ requests and with the aim of maintaining the affordability of public transportation for community residents," the Ternopil City Council stated.
