In Zaporizhzhia, an FSB agent planned to escape from a detention center using a Russian drone

The Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine exposed an FSB agent in Zaporizhzhia who, after being detained on suspicion of treason, attempted to escape from a detention center using a Russian occupiers’ attack drone.

According to the investigation, the suspect is a mobilized serviceman who deserted his military unit and defected to the enemy.

As law enforcement established, the man was looking for a way to make money through messaging apps, where he was contacted by a representative of the Russian special services. After being recruited, the agent was tasked with gathering intelligence on one of the temporary bases of an elite unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Russian special services planned to use the information obtained to guide a strike drone toward Ukrainian military positions.

However, SBU officers uncovered the agent’s activities in time and detained him just as he was preparing an intelligence report to send to his Russian handlers.

After his arrest, the suspect did not cease collaborating with the enemy. According to the investigation, he devised a new plan and intended to contact his handler in the FSB to request an attack by a drone on the detention center building.

According to the traitor’s plan, the drone strike was intended to damage the detention center building, provoke panic and chaos among the staff, and allow him to escape from the high-security facility.

The SBU’s counterintelligence unit uncovered this plan in time and prevented its execution.

SBU investigators informed the detainee that he is suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—treason committed under martial law.

The suspect is currently in custody without the right to bail.

If found guilty by the court, he faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The SBU is continuing to investigate all circumstances of the case and is identifying possible accomplices of the Russian intelligence agent.
