Ukraine Integrates Its Energy Market with the EU: Zelenskyy Signs the Law

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law that launches the integration of the Ukrainian electricity market with the European one.

The document provides for the implementation of a market coupling mechanism. This will allow for the automatic harmonization of prices and volumes of electricity trade between Ukraine and EU countries.

This applies to trading on both the day-ahead market and the intraday market.

The law also introduces a European model for risk assessment in the energy sector, capacity assurance mechanisms, and new tools for the stable operation of the power system.

Separately, the interaction between the grid operator and the market operator is regulated to ensure uninterrupted cross-border trade.

In addition, the document expands opportunities for consumers: they will be able not only to purchase electricity but also to sell it or manage their own consumption.

The law is expected to promote the development of distributed generation, cogeneration, and the overall modernization of Ukraine’s energy sector.

EU ambassadors do not support Ukraine’s accelerated membership.

Zelenskyy announced negotiations with the EU on airspace protection.
