Ukraine will open a special account for the restoration of the Chernobyl exclusion zone
Ukraine, together with its international partners, has signed an agreement to open a special account for the construction of a new safe confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.
According to him, the agreement also provides for the first financial tranche for the project’s implementation.
In total, more than €500 million is needed to restore the containment structure, while agreements are already in place to secure approximately €100 million.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is launching a large-scale fundraising effort to restore the damaged shelter over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was struck by a Russian drone. This involves hundreds of millions of euros and a multi-year project aimed at restoring the structure to full functionality by the end of the decade.
A Chernobyl NPP employee and five National Guard soldiers who were on duty guarding the facility remain in Russian captivity. This was reported by Serhiy Tarakanov, Director General of the State Specialized Enterprise “Chernobyl NPP.”
