The Ukrainian Freyja air defense system is scheduled to undergo testing by the end of 2027

The Ukrainian company Fire Point plans to carry out its first ballistic missile interception using the advanced Freyja missile defense system by the end of 2027. This was announced by the company’s CEO and CTO, Iryna Terekh.

According to her, the developers have already completed testing of the FP-7.x interceptor missile, and the most challenging phase—integrating all elements of the system into a single unit—is currently underway. The company acknowledges that it has set an extremely ambitious goal for itself—to implement a program that typically takes 20–30 years in just two to three years.

Fire Point also emphasized that Freyja is being developed without a remote shutdown capability (kill switch) and will be based on an open architecture, which will allow various manufacturers to integrate their solutions into a single system. According to Terekh, this should ensure greater technological independence and accelerate the development of the system.

The Ukrainian side is responsible for developing the interceptor missile, the launch system, and system integration, while international partners are supplying specific critical components, including radars and homing heads. There are also plans to involve other Ukrainian defense manufacturers in the project.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a separate meeting of international partners dedicated to the creation of the pan-European FREYJA missile defense system may take place in the near future. According to him, Ukraine hopes to hold the meeting as early as July or August, as the project’s implementation must be accelerated as much as possible.

Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has not yet received some of the missiles for air defense systems that partners had previously promised to deliver. He said that due to such delays, the country is losing the opportunity to better protect its people and civilian infrastructure from Russian attacks.
