The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has identified the regions hardest hit by the heat wave
Adverse weather conditions in late July 2026 negatively affected crop growth in various regions of Ukraine. Cool weather, heavy downpours, hail, squalls, and localized drought posed risks to the harvest.
According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, weather that was cool for mid-summer prevailed in Ukraine during the third ten-day period of July.
On the coldest days, the average daily air temperature was 3–7°C below the climatic norm, and overall, the average temperature for the ten-day period was 2–3°C below normal, corresponding to the weather conditions of the second half of June.
During the ten-day period, several cyclones and active cold atmospheric fronts passed over Ukraine.
“In many cases, these were accompanied by heavy downpours, squalls, and hail,” noted the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
Experts clarified that the precipitation took the form of localized thunderstorms, but its distribution was uneven: the western regions received significantly less rain than the central, southern, and eastern regions, where the highest amounts of precipitation were observed.
In the right-bank regions of Ukraine, cool and wet weather posed risks to the quality of early grain crops.
“In particular, grain blackening and fungal diseases hindered ripening,” explained the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
In addition, rain and heavy dew slowed the pace of the harvest, and active pest development was observed in the fields.
Despite significant precipitation in certain regions, some areas of the Kharkiv region and the southern regions of Ukraine continued to experience a moisture deficit.
Due to soil drought, agrometeorological conditions remained unfavorable, leading to:
- stunted plant growth;
- premature ripening of late-maturing crops;
- a likely decrease in crop yields.
In late July, low nighttime air and soil temperatures negatively affected heat-loving crops and vegetables.
At the same time, the Hydrometeorological Center noted that the cool weather, combined with periodic rains, helped maintain sufficient soil moisture levels.
“At the same time, they limited moisture evaporation from the soil and, together with periodic rains, maintained soil moisture levels for agricultural crops at a satisfactory level,” the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center concluded.
