The Office of the President welcomed the passage of the U.S. sanctions bill against Russia
Vladislav Vlasyuk welcomed the U.S. Congress’s passage of the bill introduced by Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal imposing sanctions on Russia. The presidential representative on sanctions policy noted that the bill, in particular, provides for “punitive tariffs” on countries that purchase Russian energy resources, which is intended to reduce Russia’s oil revenues.
He made these remarks in comments to reporters.
Vlasyuk welcomed the House of Representatives’ passage of the Graham-Blumenthal bill and noted that this law should become an important element of comprehensive pressure on Russia.
“Russia still derives significant revenue from oil sales, particularly through countries that continue to purchase its energy resources… The tariffs against countries purchasing Russian energy resources, as provided for in the bill, could become an effective tool to reduce these revenues and raise the cost of cooperation with Russia,” the presidential envoy noted.
He also welcomed the fact that the sanctions cover Iran—since Moscow and Tehran have long cooperated in the military-industrial sector, exchanged technologies, and used joint supply channels, and Iranian drones and weapons components have become part of the war against Ukraine.
“We expect the sanctions to make Russian energy exports more expensive, more complicated, and less profitable. This does not mean an immediate end to the war, but it does mean a gradual reduction in Russia’s ability to maintain its current level of intensity on the battlefield,” Vlasyuk added, according to European Truth.
As a reminder, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill imposing sanctions against Russia.
Meanwhile, during a meeting in Brussels, European Union countries failed to reach an agreement on extending sanctions against Russia.
Prior to this, Kallas announced new sanctions against Russia.
The EU has published a full list of new sanctions against Russia.
