In Ukraine, during mobilization, certain categories of citizens working in the education sector may be granted a deferment from conscription.
This was reported on the Facebook page of the Kyiv Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support.
This applies to students, researchers, and educators who meet specific criteria.
Specifically, the following are eligible for a deferment:
- students in vocational, pre-higher, and higher education who are enrolled in full-time or dual-track programs and are pursuing the next level of education;
- doctoral students and interns;
- research and research-teaching staff of educational and scientific institutions who hold a degree;
- teachers at schools, colleges, and vocational-technical institutions, provided they work at their primary place of employment for at least 0.75 of a full-time position.
The Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center emphasizes that it is important to apply for a deferment in a timely manner.
“It is important to contact the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center before a person is sent to a mobilization center or added to the military unit’s roster,” the statement reads.
In Ukraine, in May 2026, mobilization rules will remain in effect without changes if martial law is extended. The conscription procedure will, as before, depend on age, military status, and the presence of a deferment.
As a reminder, parents with multiple children in Ukraine are entitled to a deferment from mobilization, though this is not automatically guaranteed.
Meanwhile, the head of the National Police stated that law enforcement officers’ participation in mobilization activities is not their direct duty and has negative consequences. According to him, this practice affects public perception of the police.
