Ukraine may introduce 6- to 10-month contracts in the Armed Forces

The Ukrainian Armed Forces plan to introduce a new form of service—short-term contracts lasting six to ten months—which could serve as an alternative to long-term service. According to military leadership, the initiative is primarily aimed at those who already have military experience or have undergone treatment for injuries and wish to return to the military for a limited period.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are developing a new approach to military service that involves short-term contracts lasting six to ten months, intended to provide an additional option for those who wish to serve but are not ready or able to sign long-term agreements.

This was announced by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi in an interview with Militarnyi, explaining that the new system is primarily aimed at military personnel who have already served, were wounded, and were discharged for medical reasons but still wish to return to the military. “The introduction of the so-called short-term contract for six to nine months is intended for those servicemen who were discharged for medical reasons as a result of injuries but wish to sign a contract,” Syrskyi said.

According to him, the idea for these changes was developed not only at the command level but also in response to requests from the soldiers themselves, who have repeatedly asked for service to be made more flexible and predictable in terms of duration, as long-term contracts are too burdensome a commitment for some people.

At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will continue to offer standard two- to three-year contracts, especially for new recruits, while each soldier will be able to choose a service format based on their own capabilities and health status.

Separately, Syrskyi emphasized that the basic mobilization system without a contractual form remains in effect, and the level of pay and allowances for all service members, regardless of the type of service, will be the same. “This is truly an innovative project, which is likely being introduced for the first time in countries at war,” added the Commander-in-Chief, noting that the changes are intended to make the service system more flexible and adapted to the realities of war.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine plan to set the minimum salary for military personnel at 30,000 hryvnias, as stated by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi.
