The cost of operating diesel cars has risen sharply in Ukraine

In July, the cost of operating diesel cars rose the most in Ukraine. The cost of driving 100 km per month rose by 66 UAH to 489 UAH. At the same time, gasoline-powered cars remain the most expensive mode of transportation in terms of costs, while electric cars charged at home are the most economical.

This was reported by Delo.ua, citing calculations by the Automotive Market Research Institute. For their analysis, experts used Volkswagen Golf VII FL models with different powertrains, which allowed them to compare costs without being influenced by differences in model design.

According to analysts’ estimates, in July, the cost per 100 km was:

  • an electric car charged at home using the nighttime rate – 38 UAH;
  • electric vehicle charged at home using the daytime rate – 76 UAH;
  • electric vehicle at a public AC charging station – 333 UAH;
  • electric vehicle at a fast DC charging station – 403 UAH;
  • a car with LPG equipment – 473 UAH;
  • a diesel car – 489 UAH;
  • gasoline-powered car – 567 UAH.

The cost of operating diesel cars rose the most over the month—by 66 UAH per 100 km. For gasoline-powered cars, this figure increased by 45 UAH, and for cars with LPG equipment—by 9 UAH.

The cost of charging electric vehicles at public charging stations also increased. A 100-km trip when charging at AC stations became 18 UAH more expensive—up to 333 UAH—and at high-speed DC stations—also by 18 UAH, up to 403 UAH. At the same time, home charging costs remained unchanged.

The Automotive Market Research Institute explained that the rise in prices for cars with internal combustion engines is linked to the increase in fuel prices at the end of July. According to the study, diesel fuel rose to approximately 89 UAH per liter, and A-95 gasoline to 81 UAH per liter.

Analysts also warn that starting August 1, the cost of charging electric vehicles at public stations may increase due to a rise in electricity transmission rates. They estimate that this could increase costs by an additional 9–18 UAH for every 100 km driven.
