Cabbage prices have risen sharply in Ukraine
This week, the Ukrainian market experienced a shortage of new-crop cabbage, causing wholesale prices for the vegetable to rise significantly.
The main reason was a slowdown in the ripening process due to hot weather.
According to analysts at EastFruit, Ukrainian farmers are currently selling white cabbage for 15–22 UAH/kg. On average, this is 37% more expensive than at the end of last week. Just a week ago, prices did not exceed 18 UAH/kg.
Several factors have influenced the market situation. Due to the heat, the ripening of the new cabbage crop has slowed, leading to a reduction in supply.
In addition, the quality of some of the produce has deteriorated due to diseases and pests. As a result, high-quality cabbage is selling at a higher price.
Another reason for the shortage is that most farms have already finished selling early-season cabbage, while late-season varieties have not yet reached the market in sufficient quantities.
At the same time, demand for cabbage remains quite high, which further supports rising prices.
The current price of the vegetable is already, on average, 59% higher than last year’s level.
Analysts note that if current sales rates continue, farmers may continue to raise cabbage prices.
Cabbage prices in Ukrainian retail chains currently vary depending on the store and promotions:
- at Varus, cabbage is sold at a discounted price of 11.90 UAH/kg;
- at ATB, cabbage can be purchased for 14.89 UAH/kg;
- at Silpo, prices start at approximately 23 UAH/kg.
Thus, wholesale prices for cabbage have already risen significantly, and future trends will depend primarily on the volume of the new harvest and demand.
At the same time, strawberries have reappeared on the Ukrainian market. Wholesale prices for them start at 100 UAH/kg, while larger berries are selling for 140–160 UAH/kg.
In addition, the active harvest of melons is underway in Ukraine. Thanks to favorable weather conditions, the supply of watermelons is gradually increasing, leading to a sharp drop in their prices.
This was reported by analysts from the EastFruit project.
As a reminder, as of August 14, prices for most fruits and berries in Ukraine remained stable. At the same time, strawberries, sweet cherries, and blueberries are still relatively expensive.
