Nearly 7,500 cars were scrapped in Ukraine: Which cars were sent to the scrapyard?
In the second quarter of 2026, 7,424 vehicles were deregistered in Ukraine for scrapping. This figure is nearly identical to that for the same period last year, when 7,513 vehicles were sent to the scrapyard. Most of the vehicles scrapped were over 30 years old.
Most of the vehicles written off were obsolete. More than 3,200 of the scrapped vehicles were over 30 years old, while 2,185 were between 20 and 30 years old.
In the ranking of the brands most frequently sent to the scrapyard, the top spots were taken by VAZ (1,996 units), GAZ (665 units), and ZAZ (450 units). Among foreign brands, Volkswagen (264 units) and Opel (249 units) were scrapped the most.
In the model rankings, the leaders in scrapping were the VAZ-2106 (286 units), VAZ-2107 (280 units), and VAZ-2101 (273 units). Next were the Daewoo Lanos (236 units), GAZ "Gazel" (214 units), as well as the ZAZ "Tavria" and Lada 21099 (153 units each).
By country of origin, the breakdown of scrapped vehicles is as follows:
Soviet and Russian automotive industry — 2,023 units;
Ukrainian brands — 1,252;
German brands — 1,005;
French — 359;
Chinese — 349;
Japanese — 280.
Among the rare and one-of-a-kind models in the recycling database were the Wartburg 1300, Citroën BX 19, Alfa Romeo 155 and 164, Mazda Xedos 6, Nissan Prairie, Hyundai Pony and Lantra, Citroën ZX, Renault 9, Opel Calibra, as well as several Fiat compacts. The oldest scrapped vehicle was a 1954 GAZ-69a, which had been in service for 72 years.
According to analysts, the average age of cars on our roads continues to rise, and “even the most worn-out vehicles are being kept in service until the very end.”
In total, 119,000 vehicles entered Ukraine during the second quarter of 2026, while only 7,400 were taken off the road. The ratio stands at 6 decommissioned cars per 100 new arrivals. In the U.S., this ratio is 40–60 scrapped vehicles per 100 new ones, and in the EU, it is 70–90.
"The share of brand-new car purchases remains modest, and the natural process of phasing out and scrapping old cars is hampered by the low purchasing power of citizens and businesses," the IDA notes.

Ukrainians have started buying gasoline-powered cars more often and have identified the most popular model.
