A court in Uzhhorod sentenced a driver to 10 years in prison for a fatal accident
The Uzhhorod City and District Court found a 30-year-old driver of an Audi Q5 guilty of causing a major traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of two young people and left two others with serious injuries.
Following a public indictment by juvenile prosecutors from the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant was sentenced to the maximum penalty.
The high-profile tragedy caused a significant public outcry in the region due to the flagrant violation of safety rules.
The fatal accident itself occurred in April 2024 on Slovyanska Embankment in Uzhhorod.
During the court hearing, the prosecutor fully proved that the man was driving while intoxicated and was traveling at four times the speed limit—instead of 40 km/h, the car was traveling at approximately 160–170 km/h.
Due to the massive speeding, the offender completely lost control of the vehicle while maneuvering.
The driver lost control, the car veered off the road and crashed into a tree, after which it overturned.
As a result of the severe impact, the 19-year-old and 21-year-old passengers died at the scene before medical personnel arrived. Two other people, including a 16-year-old minor, sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized in intensive care.
During the court hearings, one of the victims confirmed in court that prior to the accident, the group, including the driver, had been drinking alcohol and driving through the city at high speed.
An official forensic medical examination determined that the driver’s blood alcohol level was 1.66 �
