The Supreme Court upheld the sentence handed down to the chief forensic expert of the Prykarpattia region
The Supreme Court upheld the sentence against Igor Ivaskievich in a bribery case. The former chief forensic medical examiner of the Ivano-Frankivsk region will serve five years in prison.
The Supreme Court upheld the sentence against Igor Ivaskievich, the former head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Bureau of Forensic Medical Examination. The official, who was caught taking a bribe, will serve five years behind bars, and all his property will be confiscated.
Igor Ivaskievich, 48, served as the chief forensic medical expert of the Carpathian region from 2014 to 2021. In 2020, he demanded $4,000 from a subordinate—a medical orderly at the Halytskyi Interdistrict Branch—who was seeking to be transferred to the position of forensic medical examiner at the regional bureau. To avoid being exposed, Ivaskievich communicated with the candidate exclusively through an intermediary—another subordinate.
“In October 2020, the official signed the appointment order. Afterward, the newly appointed doctor handed over the agreed-upon amount to the intermediary at a car wash. The intermediary kept $1,000 for himself and gave the remaining $3,000 to the official during a face-to-face meeting. The defendant hid the money he received in his mother’s garage, where it was later seized by law enforcement,” the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office stated on Tuesday, July 21.
In April 2025, the Ivano-Frankivsk City Court acquitted Igor Ivashkevych; however, on January 13, 2026, the Ternopil Court of Appeals found the official guilty of bribery and sentenced him to five years in prison.
The official never admitted his guilt and attempted to appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court. He continued to insist that the seized money was a debt repayment from the victim. As evidence, Ivaskevych submitted his amended 2021 financial disclosure statement, which listed the amount. However, the court took into account the fact that the official had made changes to the statement six months after being caught taking a bribe.
After reviewing all the case materials, the Supreme Court upheld the sentence against Ivaskevych—five years of imprisonment with the confiscation of all property belonging to him and a three-year ban on holding positions involving the exercise of governmental, organizational, or administrative functions.
