The shortage of train tickets in Ukraine may worsen this summer
This summer, it may be even harder for Ukrainians to buy train tickets due to rising demand and the loss of Ukrzaliznytsia’s rolling stock as a result of Russian shelling.
This was reported by UNIAN.
Iryna Kosse, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting, believes that route reductions are unlikely, as Ukrzaliznytsia and the government will try to avoid such a scenario due to the social sensitivity of the issue.
In her assessment, a new increase in passenger ticket prices should not be expected in the near future, as the company has recently changed fares for certain categories and introduced dynamic pricing.
At the same time, the expert noted that raising prices will not solve the problem of a shortage of railcars, but may only reduce seasonal demand.
Among possible solutions, she cited stricter control over ticket sales, combating speculation, and seeking used passenger cars abroad, particularly in the Baltic states.
According to Kosse, Ukrzaliznytsia is already partially renewing its rolling stock by receiving new cars from the Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works, but the pace of renewal may lag behind the rate of losses.
