In Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, law enforcement officials have charged a man with gaining access to a 78-year-old woman’s bank account and embezzling her funds.

This was reported by the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Police.

The victim is a resident of the Burshtyn community who lost her son, a soldier, in the war and was receiving government financial assistance. The suspect worked in the transportation industry and drove the woman to the bank.

According to the investigation, during one of the trips, the man learned about the payments and decided to take the money. He began to gain the pensioner’s trust—helping with household chores, bringing groceries, and promising to do repairs.

Taking advantage of a moment when the woman left her phone unattended, the suspect installed a banking app on his smartphone, entered her card details, and linked his own phone number to it. By intercepting the SMS code, he gained access to the account.

Between August and October 2025, the man made 22 unauthorized transfers of 10,000 hryvnias each to his own accounts and a relative’s card. In total, he embezzled 220,000 hryvnias.

The disappearance of the funds was first noticed by the victim’s relative, who noticed the relevant notifications on her phone.

The court is currently set to determine a pretrial measure for the suspect. The Galician Department of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the proceedings.

Earlier, the Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine prevented a large-scale explosion in the center of Dnipro by catching a Russian intelligence operative red-handed.

As a reminder, a man was detained in Kyiv for promising to “take care of” someone to help them evade mobilization.
