A man from Volyn was convicted of threatening a journalist with a wreath

The Rivne City Court found a Volyn resident guilty of threatening journalist Vlad Isaiev and sentenced him to two years of probation.

According to the May 19 verdict, Vlad Isaiev (listed in the verdict as Volodymyr Isaiev – ed.) is the head of Zakhidnyy Argument LLC, a journalist, and the founder of the Telegram channel “Stirlitz,” which publishes insider information about local politicians. In the media, he is known as Vlad Isaiev. The journalist confirmed that the verdict refers specifically to him.

According to the case file, a man left a funeral wreath at the journalist’s apartment door with the inscription “from grateful readers.” The victim perceived this as a real threat related to his professional activities.

According to the investigation, in the summer of 2023, 25-year-old Volyn resident Vadym Smolinsky, along with unidentified individuals, decided to threaten Vlad Isaev due to his professional activities.

On the night of July 3, the defendant wrote the phrase “Eternal memory, bright memory to Isaev from grateful readers” on a ribbon attached to the funeral wreath and handed it to an unknown person, who left the wreath at the door of the journalist’s apartment in Rivne.

The police tracked down the suspect five months after the incident. Since the man was not at home, the notice of suspicion was handed to his mother. Vadym Smolinsky later appeared in court. He was ordered to be held in custody with the option of posting bail of 414,000 UAH.

In court, Vlad Isaev stated that he perceived the funeral wreath as a real death threat and linked the incident to his journalistic activities. He also noted that his car had been set on fire a month earlier. At the same time, the victim stated that he had no claims against the defendant and asked that he not be severely punished.

Judge Dmytro Yakovlev found Vadym Smolinsky guilty under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 1 of Article 345-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (threats against a journalist in connection with professional activities, committed by a group of persons) and sentenced him to two years of probation. The verdict can still be appealed in the appellate court.
