Russia's loss of the initiative on the front lines opens a window for negotiations before winter sets in – Zelenskyy
The Russian Federation’s gradual loss of the initiative on the battlefield is creating real conditions for a diplomatic resolution to the war it started. A strategic “window” has now opened for Ukraine and its international partners to begin the negotiation process.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement in an interview with the American television network CBS News.
The head of state noted that a turning point on the front lines began to emerge as early as December 2025, when the occupying forces began to rapidly lose their offensive capabilities due to colossal monthly losses in manpower and equipment. The Ukrainian side officially shared this analysis with the White House at the beginning of the year. According to Zelenskyy, the Kremlin’s current tactic—which consists of conducting regular, massive missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s civilian and critical infrastructure—is a direct sign of military impotence and an attempt to compensate for failures directly on the front lines. Currently, the dynamics of combat operations have evened out: over the course of a month, the enemy is unable to capture more territory than the Ukrainian Defense Forces manage to liberate during counteroffensive operations.
This is precisely why the President emphasized the importance of using the current window of opportunity for diplomatic maneuvering. According to the Ukrainian leader, the parties must find an effective format, sit down at the negotiating table, and begin substantive talks before the onset of winter cold. Zelenskyy directly links the success of this scenario to two key factors: growing internal socio-political pressure on Vladimir Putin within Russia itself, as well as a radical intensification of sanctions pressure from the United States and the European Union. The head of state emphasized that the imposition of new, tougher economic restrictions against Moscow is an indispensable tool for ensuring an effective and strong diplomatic approach.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the interests of the European continent in future peace talks on ending the Russian-Ukrainian war could be represented by the E3 diplomatic format, which includes the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
The U.S. moves toward easing or lifting economic restrictions against Russia are an utterly destructive approach that will not yield positive results for the global market but will only strengthen the aggressor’s military machine.
