Zelenskyy Signed an Extension of Martial Law and Mobilization
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed laws extending martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days. The new term begins on August 2, so both measures will remain in effect at least until October 31, 2026.
This marks the twentieth extension of martial law and mobilization since the start of the full-scale war. The rules for those subject to military service remain unchanged.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed laws extending martial law and general mobilization, according to a statement from the Verkhovna Rada’s press service. Parliament noted that it had received the documents signed by the head of state. “The Verkhovna Rada has received the laws signed by the President of Ukraine,” the Verkhovna Rada reported. These are two laws:
- No. 4928-IX—extends martial law from August 2, 2026, for another 90 days;
- No. 4929-IX—extends the period of general mobilization, also starting August 2, for another 90 days.
Thus, martial law and mobilization will remain in effect until at least October 31, 2026. This marks the twentieth extension of these measures since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
What Rules Apply During Martial Law
During martial law, men subject to military service between the ages of 18 and 60 are subject to certain legal obligations. Specifically, they must:
- be registered with the military at their place of residence or stay;
- update their information in the Unified State Register in a timely manner;
- always carry their passport and military registration document—either in paper or electronic form;
- report to territorial recruitment centers or training centers within the specified timeframes;
- undergo an annual military medical examination to determine their fitness for service.
Who May Be Mobilized
Men between the ages of 25 and 60 are subject to mandatory mobilization if they are medically fit for military service and have no legal grounds for deferment. Before being assigned to a military unit, all those mobilized undergo basic military training at training centers.
Men between the ages of 18 and 25 may be drafted only in specific cases provided for by law. This applies to reserve officers and those who have already completed their mandatory military service. In other cases, they may join the Armed Forces of Ukraine only on a voluntary basis. Women who are registered for military service may be called upon to defend the country only if they wish to do so. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump during his visit to the United States next week. According to “Suspilne,” the talks may take place as part of the Ukrainian leader’s working visit.
