Zelenskyy spoke about the future of arms exports
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian arms exports should become one of the sources of the country’s economic strength in the future. According to him, the government is already working on measures that will allow this sector to develop without compromising the needs of the Ukrainian army.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a new meeting dedicated to issues of armament and the development of the defense industry. According to the head of state, the meeting discussed not only providing the Ukrainian military with the necessary weapons but also the prospects for exporting products from the Ukrainian defense industry.
Zelenskyy emphasized that this sector could become a key element of the country’s economic development. “Today I held a detailed and very practical meeting regarding our armaments: what exactly is needed for our defense in Ukraine in larger quantities and what exactly can be exported to further strengthen Ukraine and strengthen our ties with the world—both in the short term and the long term,” the president said.
Weapons could become an important source of revenue
The head of state is convinced that the Ukrainian defense industry has the potential not only to supply the army but also to operate in international markets. In recent years, Ukrainian companies have significantly increased production of weapons, ammunition, drones, and other military equipment. Some of these developments are already attracting the attention of Ukraine’s partners abroad.
According to Zelenskyy, arms exports could become one of the factors ensuring the country’s economic stability in the future. “Arms exports must become a long-term source of economic strength for Ukraine,” the president emphasized.
Authorities are preparing the necessary decisions
Zelenskyy reported that mechanisms are currently being developed to put these plans into practice. Several government institutions are involved in the process, including the National Security and Defense Council, the Ministry of Defense, and members of parliament.
According to the president, the government is striving to ensure that the necessary decisions are adopted as quickly as possible. “We are working out the details: the NSDC, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and the parliamentary component, so that any regulatory changes are not delayed,” he noted.
What does this mean for Ukraine
The issue of arms exports remains one of the most sensitive during a full-scale war. First and foremost, the state must meet the needs of its own Defense Forces. At the same time, the Ukrainian defense-industrial complex has significantly increased production in recent years. New enterprises, technologies, and types of weapons have emerged, all of which have already proven their effectiveness on the battlefield.
That is why the government is considering the possibility of creating a system under which some of the products could also be sold on foreign markets. This would allow for attracting additional funds, expanding production, and supporting the development of Ukrainian defense enterprises. In addition, arms exports could strengthen Ukraine’s cooperation with international partners and help Ukrainian manufacturers establish themselves among the leading players in the global defense market.
No specific decisions regarding export mechanisms have been announced yet. However, the president’s statement indicates that this issue has already moved to the stage of practical consideration at the state level. This is evident from the head of state’s remarks.
Ukraine expects that the Special Tribunal on Russia’s crime of aggression against our state will issue its first guilty verdict in 2028, and the first official indictment will be issued as early as 2027.
