Russian drones struck a cemetery in the Chernihiv region
Russian drones struck Snovsk in the Chernihiv region in broad daylight, and one of the attacks hit a cemetery, damaging the graves of Ukrainian soldiers. A woman who was in the cemetery at the time was injured in the attack. This was reported by Pavlo Miroshnychenko, head of the Koryukivka District Military Administration.
The attack took place on Tuesday, May 26, when Russian drones attacked Snovsk in the Koryukivka district of Chernihiv region for about an hour. According to Pavlo Miroshnychenko, head of the Koryukivka District Military Administration, one of the strikes hit the cemetery grounds, specifically the Alley of Heroes—a place where Ukrainian soldiers are buried.
The explosions damaged monuments, headstones, and gravesites. This is one of the most painful consequences of the attack, as these are the graves of Ukraine’s fallen defenders. A 40-year-old woman was in the cemetery during the strike. She sustained injuries from the explosions. She was promptly transported to a medical facility, where she is receiving treatment. Medical personnel are assessing the victim’s condition.
In addition to the cemetery, damage to transportation infrastructure and other buildings has been reported in the city. Smoke was observed at one of the enterprises after a drone struck it. Also, in the Koryukivka district, a forest fire broke out over an area of about seven hectares due to a drone crash.
The Snivsk City Council stated that work to restore the damaged burial sites will begin once the security situation allows. Local authorities emphasize that the top priority right now is people’s safety and addressing the aftermath of the shelling.
The attack on the cemetery where Ukrainian soldiers are buried has caused a particular outcry among local residents, as it concerns not only infrastructure but also the memory of the fallen. People on social media are calling such strikes particularly cynical, as they target places that should be off-limits to any military targets.
