Drones attacked an explosives factory in Dzerzhinsk, Russia
On the night of August 19, a series of explosions rocked Dzerzhinsk in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Region, after which thick white smoke appeared over the city. Local residents reported a massive drone attack, and the source of the smoke may have been located on the grounds of the Yakov Sverdlov Explosives Plant.
According to Astra, local residents reported numerous explosions and a drone attack during the night. Eyewitnesses posted videos showing flashes and thick smoke over the city.
Exilenova+ also reported the explosions. According to the channel, one of the drones may have been shot down right next to a high-rise building.
Later, Astra reported that the likely source of the extensive smoke could have been the grounds of the Yakov Sverdlov Explosives Plant.
The facility is located in the western part of Dzerzhinsk, approximately 5 km from the high-rise building near which, according to local residents, a damaged drone may have crashed.
The Sverdlov Plant is part of Russia’s military-industrial complex and is one of the country’s largest manufacturers of explosives.
The facility is subject to sanctions imposed by Ukraine, the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Switzerland.
However, information regarding the exact consequences of the attack and the causes of the fire on the factory grounds requires further confirmation.
Dzerzhinsk has already been targeted by attacks. On the morning of April 30, explosions were also reported in the city, after which smoke rose over the area of the explosives plant.

At that time, the explosions and smoke were also recorded amid attacks on facilities belonging to the Russian military-industrial complex.

Ukrainian forces repelled an attack by Russian tanks in the Donetsk region and destroyed at least seven T-72B3A tanks, some of which were equipped with the Arena-M active protection system. Ars Technica reported this, citing Euromaidan Press and video footage of the Ukrainian drone strikes.
Following a massive drone attack on Moscow on August 18, a large-scale power outage occurred in several districts of the Russian capital. Due to the outages, residential neighborhoods were left without power, the subway came to a halt, and elevators got stuck in buildings.
