Two Russian military personnel have been notified that they are suspected of raping and murdering a woman in Bucha
On July 28, the Office of the Prosecutor General announced that two servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces are under investigation on suspicion of raping and murdering a 34-year-old woman during the temporary occupation of Bucha, Kyiv Oblast, in March 2022.
According to the investigation, the soldiers involved in the crime are members of the 234th Airborne Assault Regiment of the 76th Airborne Assault Division of the Russian Airborne Forces. One of them held the position of deputy platoon commander—gun commander—while the other was a senior mechanic-driver in the self-propelled artillery platoon.
The investigation established that Russian servicemen brought a civilian woman to the premises of a private residence on Vokzalna Street in Bucha. According to witness testimony, five Russian servicemen were present there at the time. During the investigation, law enforcement identified two of them as the direct perpetrators of the sexual assault.
According to the investigation, the suspects took turns raping the victim while using physical force. When the woman tried to escape, one of the soldiers fired at her with aimed shots. She died from her injuries.
The Office of the Prosecutor General noted that an indictment against the Russian serviceman accused of murdering the woman had already been submitted to the court. Further investigation established the circumstances of the sexual assault and identified the second soldier involved in the crime.
Both Russian servicemen have been notified of charges under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—cruel treatment of the civilian population, combined with sexual violence.
