Estonian MP Mikhelson criticizes US understanding of causes of Russia's war against Ukraine
In Estonia, Chairman of the parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Marko Mikhelson said that Donald Trump's administration has an insufficient understanding of the deep-rooted causes of Russia's war against Ukraine. In his view, Moscow sees no need for a breakthrough in peace efforts and expects to intensify attacks on Ukraine's economic infrastructure as winter approaches, ERR News reports.
Talks in Moscow
According to Mikhelson's assessment, the meeting in Moscow between Vladimir Putin, the president of the aggressor state Russia, and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner did not bring a breakthrough, as Putin has no need for one.
Mikhelson believes that Russia sees an opportunity to destroy Ukraine's economic infrastructure as much as possible ahead of winter, while, according to him, problems with Ukrainian air defense are becoming increasingly serious.
Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said after the talks that the Russian side had presented its assessment of the situation during the so-called “special operation,” noted the successes of the Russian army, and emphasized the need to eliminate the “root causes of the conflict.”

Mikhelson rejected this explanation. He stated that the cause of the war is not NATO's alleged desire to expand, but the intention to restore the Russian Empire and change borders by force and violence.
Economic interests and attacks on Kyiv
According to Ushakov, economic issues were discussed in detail during the Moscow meeting, including possible major Russian-American projects beneficial to both sides. Mikhelson noted that Witkoff and Kushner represent not only traditional diplomacy but also economic interests. In his view, the desire to restore normal interaction between the United States and Russia gives Putin confidence that he can manipulate his interlocutors.
The Estonian MP also spoke about his arrival in Kyiv. According to him, a colleague from the Verkhovna Rada told him that they had managed to sleep that night, whereas Russian air strikes had continued uninterruptedly for approximately the previous ten days. ERR News notes that attacks on Kyiv resumed early Tuesday morning.
