Photo: Russian invaders damaged an historic church in Podil

As a result of the Russian attack on Kyiv on the evening of September 27, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Podil was damaged. The church building, which is over 180 years old, sustained damage. Inside the building, there are numerous pieces of debris, as well as shattered icons.

According to the priest, the church sustained damage as a result of the attack. “The enemy has damaged this sacred site, which is a place of prayer, hope, and spiritual support for many Kyiv residents,” Kravets noted.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is an Orthodox church in Podil, Kyiv, and a 19th-century architectural landmark. Construction began after the 1811 fire in Podil, on the site of a wooden church. Construction lasted about 30 years, and the church was consecrated in 1841. In the early 20th century, the church was painted by Ukrainian artist Hryhorii Svitlytskyi. Among those baptized here were Svitlytskyi himself and writer Mikhail Bulgakov. During the Soviet era, the church was closed and converted into a warehouse, but services resumed in 1941. The church was renovated in 1984. Today, the church belongs to the Kyiv Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

News of the damage to the church emerged on September 28. The rector also published photographs showing the aftermath of the attack. As noted by the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, numerous pieces of debris lie inside the building.

In Brovary, Kyiv Oblast, a fire broke out on the grounds of an industrial enterprise due to debris from a downed Russian drone. The fire occurred in the industrial zone. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.

In the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv, debris was reported to have fallen on an educational institution following a Russian attack. Information regarding the extent of the damage and possible casualties is being verified.
