Sports competitions in Russia were canceled due to excessive bear activity

The "Race to Chekhov Peak" skyrunning event, which was scheduled for October 3, has been canceled due to high bear activity. The competition was scheduled to take place on Sakhalin Island in Russia. The press service of the Sakhalin Region Federation of Cross-Country Skiing, Biathlon, and Mountaineering announced the cancellation of the race.

The race was scheduled for October 3. Participants were to cover a distance of 24 km, with a total elevation gain of 1,350 meters.

“We made this decision for the safety of the participants, volunteers, and organizers. There has been high bear activity in the area where the race is to be held. Under these conditions, we cannot guarantee your safety on the course. We are very sorry that circumstances have turned out this way, but the safety of the participants remains our top priority,” the organizers’ statement reads.

Skyrunning is an extreme sport that combines running with elements of mountaineering. During competitions, participants engage in high-speed ascents and runs along technically challenging routes in high-altitude terrain.

This is reported by Russian propaganda media.

In Ukraine, Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev will be tried in absentia.

Earlier, law enforcement identified a Russian army battalion commander who, according to the investigation, ordered the use of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian women to cover the retreat of a Russian military convoy. Under the procedural guidance of the Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the man was notified in absentia of his status as a suspect in violating the laws and customs of war.

In the Kherson region, 237 people were notified of suspicion in cases related to the organization and conduct of a Russian pseudo-referendum in the temporarily occupied territories. Another 107 people are suspected of activities related to the conduct of illegal “elections.”

Earlier, law enforcement officials notified two female residents of Kherson in absentia that they were suspected of participating in the organization and conduct of an illegal “referendum” on the region’s accession to the Russian Federation. According to the investigation, they were members of the occupying “election commission” and helped conduct the sham vote. Both suspects are currently in hiding in the temporarily occupied territory.
