The UN General Assembly and Security Council to discuss consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine on Tuesday
On Tuesday, 24 February 2026, a series of high-level events dedicated to the anniversary of the full-scale war in Ukraine will take place at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
The key events will be a special session of the United Nations General Assembly and a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, where the international community will discuss ways to achieve a just peace.
During the eleventh Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly, which will begin at 10:00 a.m. local time, delegates will focus on the document titled “Promoting a Comprehensive, Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine.”
The resolution is expected to once again reaffirm Ukraine’s territorial integrity and call for an end to aggression in accordance with the UN Charter.
The emergency session is being held in a format that allows all member states to express their positions. Ukrainian diplomacy, together with its partners, is working to ensure the document receives the broadest possible support, demonstrating the world’s unwavering solidarity with the Ukrainian people in the fifth year of the devastating war.
Ukraine’s position at both meetings will be presented by Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa. She will emphasise the need for a genuine mechanism to hold the aggressor accountable for war crimes and the destruction of infrastructure.
The evening meeting of the Security Council, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (10:00 p.m. Kyiv time), will be chaired by the United Kingdom’s representative. UK Minister Stephen Doughty will lead the discussion on the strategic consequences of four years of full-scale conflict for global security.
The Security Council’s focus will include the humanitarian situation, nuclear safety and the impact of the war on global food markets. The United Kingdom, as the presiding country, stresses the importance of maintaining pressure on the Kremlin to restore international law and order.
The US representative also criticised Russia during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
