Ukrainian and German foreign ministers discuss increasing pressure on Russia — Anadolu Agency

In Turkey, the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Germany, Andrii Sybiha and Johann Wadephul, discussed increasing pressure on Russia and strengthening Ukraine's resilience ahead of winter during a telephone conversation. Sybiha reported this on the social media platform X.

Wadephul's talks with Lavrov

According to Anadolu Agency, Wadephul informed Sybiha about the results of his previous talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, representing the aggressor state. Wadephul and Lavrov held talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It was their first meeting since the start of Russia's war against Ukraine in February 2022.

Sybiha thanked Wadephul for conveying Kyiv and Berlin's joint firm position to the Russian side. It includes a demand that Moscow end the war, confirmation of unwavering support for Ukraine, and a warning against further hostile actions against Europe.

Steps toward a ceasefire

The foreign ministers also discussed the next joint steps to advance peace efforts and achieve a ceasefire. Russia's Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov and Wadephul addressed bilateral relations and the situation surrounding Ukraine, while Germany's foreign minister reaffirmed the publicly stated position of the German government. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova separately stated that the meeting was initiated by Germany.
