What Russian objectives in the Caspian Sea are important to Ukraine?
Ukrainian defense forces are stepping up their attacks on Russian infrastructure in the Caspian Sea. According to Andriy Ryzhenko, a first-rank captain in the Ukrainian Navy Reserve, this region is of significant military and logistical importance to Russia.
In particular, the Russian Caspian Flotilla is based in the Caspian Sea. Its ships were among the first in the Russian Navy to be equipped with “Kalibr” cruise missiles. These include Project 11661 “Tatarstan” and “Dagestan” ships, as well as Project 21631 “Buyan-M” missile carriers.
Ryzhenko noted that the “Buyan-M” can carry up to eight “Kalibr” missiles, so Russian ships in the Caspian Sea remain a potential threat to Ukraine.
At the same time, the region’s significance is not limited to military infrastructure. Russia uses the Caspian Sea for oil production, as well as for maritime transport links with Iran.
According to Ryzhenko, logistics routes between Russia and Iran pass through the Caspian Sea. Previously, there were reports of various military cargoes being delivered to Russia via this region. In particular, Tehran assisted Russia with strike drones, while Moscow, according to the military expert, provides Iran with support in other areas.
This is precisely why Russian military facilities and logistical infrastructure in the Caspian Sea are of interest to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

On the night of September 11, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck the Saratov Oil Refinery in Russia. Fires were reported on the refinery’s grounds following the attack.
As of the morning of September 10, 2026, the Russian army’s total personnel losses since the start of the full-scale invasion amount to approximately 1,502,390 soldiers. In the past 24 hours alone, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia lost another 1,520 servicemen.
The day before, 221 combat engagements were recorded on the front lines over the course of 24 hours. The enemy launched the most attacks in the Pokrovsk direction, where the Defense Forces repelled 21 assaults, and Russian troops lost more than 60 occupiers.
