Ignat explained why Shahids fly as low as possible during attacks
Russian attack drones attempt to fly as low as possible during attacks to make it more difficult for Ukrainian air defense forces to detect and intercept them, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
To ensure unimpeded flight into western Ukraine, the enemy is using the border territories of neighboring countries. In particular, drones have been spotted near the borders with Belarus, Moldova, and Romania.
“There is information that Belarus may be assisting with these flights. This has been mentioned repeatedly, and assessments have been made regarding this issue,” said Yuriy Ignat.
Also, while moving toward the capital, the invaders try to conceal aerial targets over water. From the north, they often use the Kyiv Sea for this purpose.
Drones fly as close to the ground as possible so that Ukrainian radar stations cannot detect them in time. Because of this, air defenders are actively deploying small aircraft and special ground units.
According to a representative of the Ukrainian Air Force, the following assets are currently helping to counter the attacks:
- interceptor drones;
- small-scale air defense units;
- mobile fire groups.
“No one is writing off mobile fire groups; they actually prove quite effective at low altitudes, because when we see videos appearing online today where a drone flies 10–20 meters above the ground, that’s exactly where the fire teams come in, as they can operate successfully at such distances,” Yuriy Ignat emphasized.
He made this statement during a televised marathon.
