Fuel oil is leaking again from the tanker that sank in the Kerch Strait
A new fuel oil spill has been detected in the Kerch Strait from the tanker “Volgoneft-239,” which sank in late 2024. Satellite images show an oil slick spreading from the bow of the vessel.
Analysts estimate that the new spill may have been caused by efforts to pump out remaining fuel, as well as by rising water temperatures in the Black Sea.
Despite this, Russian authorities continue to open Anapa’s beaches to the public. According to official data, 75 beaches have already been authorized to operate, and another 11 are undergoing inspection.
At the same time, vacationers continue to report traces of fuel oil on the coast, and residents of Novorossiysk complain of oil stains on their skin after swimming. Environmentalist Yevgen Vitisko stated that Anapa is not yet ready for a full-scale opening of the beach season due to residual fuel oil and other pollutants.
