Lavrov said the Kremlin believes there may have been deception following the meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that he does not rule out the possibility that the agreements reached following the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska could have been used to buy time to supply additional weapons to Ukraine.
According to Lavrov, he does not want to view the talks in Anchorage as part of a plan to stall for time, but he acknowledged that subsequent developments have raised corresponding suspicions in Moscow. He also complained about the intensifying pressure from sanctions and stated that Russia no longer views the U.S. as an “objective mediator.”
The Russian foreign minister noted that following the meeting in Alaska, the U.S. administration not only maintained previous sanctions but also imposed new restrictions against Russia. He also recalled Trump’s statements regarding the need for long-term peace in Ukraine, which, according to the Kremlin, have not been implemented in practice.
The meeting between Putin and Trump in Anchorage in August 2025 marked the first high-level talks between the leaders of Russia and the U.S. since 2021. It was followed by several rounds of talks on the war in Ukraine, but Russia maintained its maximalist demands on Kyiv.
