Mariupol is demanding more than $45 million from Russia for destroyed property
The Mariupol community has already filed 19 lawsuits against Russia totaling more than $45 million. These lawsuits seek compensation for municipal property that was destroyed, damaged, or lost as a result of Russian aggression.
On July 31, the Mariupol City Council filed two more lawsuits. One concerns the “Ukrainian House” municipal cultural center—damages are estimated at nearly $10 million. The second concerns Nursery School No. 32 “Dyvosvit,” with damages totaling over $1 million.
Of the 17 previous lawsuits, the courts have already ruled in favor of the Mariupol community in 16 cases. The Mariupol community has been awarded a total of $34.12 million in compensation. Another case regarding the Multicenter building is currently pending.
The lawsuits cover destroyed, damaged, or lost trolleybuses and buses, educational institutions, a clinic, a municipal pharmacy, and the Administrative Services Center.
Currently, independent experts are assessing damages for another 40 properties. Once the assessments are complete, the Mariupol community plans to file new lawsuits.
