In the Cherkasy region, a man who had been granted a deferment was taken 140 km away from his home
In the Cherkasy region, a man who had a legal deferment from mobilization due to caring for his father was, according to the ombudsman, forcibly taken while on his way to work. He was taken approximately 140 kilometers from his home, where, he claims, he was threatened with a weapon and forced to undergo a medical examination.
Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, reported on the incident. According to him, over the past week, seven reports were recorded in the Cherkasy region regarding possible human rights violations and potential criminal offenses committed by officials of the Zvenyhorod District Military Registration and Enlistment Office and the Special Forces. One of the cases involves a man who had a valid deferment. The reason for the deferment was caring for his father.
According to the man, he was on his way to work when a car pulled up beside him. People in military uniforms got out of the car. The man claims they forcibly pushed him into the car, twisted his arms behind his back, and handcuffed him. He was then driven off in an unknown direction. He only had time to call his father. “I’ve been kidnapped,” the man said during the call, according to Lubinets.
The man was taken 140 kilometers away
About two hours later, the man found himself 140 kilometers from his home. According to him, he had no food, money, or personal belongings with him. Lubinets stated that representatives of the Zvenyhorod Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support and the Security Service of Ukraine were involved in the situation.
The man also described threats involving the use of weapons, physical coercion, and being forced to undergo a military medical examination. At the same time, the ombudsman emphasized the key fact of this story—the man had a legal deferment from mobilization and was caring for his father. Following the intervention of the ombudsman’s representative in the Cherkasy region, Mariana Nischenko, the situation was resolved. The man returned home.
This is not an isolated incident
According to Lubinets, this is not an isolated incident. Shortly before this, another man was brought to the Zvenyhorod Territorial Recruitment Center and Military Registration Office under similar circumstances. In this case, as the ombudsman noted, the man had been removed from military registration. In other words, he was not subject to military registration due to his status.
Lubinets stated that several similar cases have already been documented within a short period of time, so each one must be investigated separately. “Each of the documented cases must be thoroughly investigated. It must be determined exactly who was involved, on what grounds, and how they acted,” the ombudsman emphasized.
According to him, if the violations are confirmed, the actions of everyone involved must be subject to an appropriate legal assessment. At this stage, the discussion centers specifically on reports and statements regarding possible violations, and final conclusions will be drawn based on the results of the investigation.
