In Donbas, so-called “DPR” militants are on trial for torturing and killing a U.S. mercenary
A group of Russian occupiers from the so-called “DPR” is being prosecuted for killing former U.S. citizen Russell Bentley. The prosecution is seeking sentences for the defendants ranging from 1.5 to 15 years.
Bentley, known by his call sign “Texas,” came to the Russian-occupied part of Donbas from the U.S. in 2014 and joined the Russian-backed militants. Bentley went missing on April 8, 2024. The American was detained by people in military uniforms while filming the aftermath of a Ukrainian shelling on a group of occupiers. He was mistaken for a spy, tortured, and beaten to death, after which his body was blown up in a car and his remains were hidden.
The DPR militants Vitaliy Vansyatsky, Vladislav Agaltsev, Volodymyr Bazhin, and Andriy Yordanov are accused of torture and physical abuse that led to Bentley’s death.
