On May 23, Russian forces launched a second strike on Balakliya in the Kharkiv region. The attack damaged the “Light of the Gospel” church, an apartment building, and private residences. The shelling sparked a fire that destroyed the church building.
This was reported in a Telegram post by Vitaliy Karabanov, head of the Balakliya City Military Administration.
According to Karabanov, the repeated shelling of the city damaged the “Light of the Gospel” church in one of the neighborhoods.
“The place where people came to pray has become a target for Russian weapons,” the head of the Military Administration stated.
An apartment building and private homes were also damaged. According to the administration, no one was injured as a result of this strike. Emergency services are working at the scene, and cleanup efforts are underway.
This was not the first strike on Balakliya that day. Earlier, two Russian drones struck the central part of the city. As a result of that attack, four residents sustained injuries of varying severity and were provided with medical assistance.
The strikes on the city center damaged cultural institutions, a high school, a civilian infrastructure facility, a café, and a multi-unit residential building. All relevant services are also working at the impact sites.

As a reminder, Russia attacked a substation in the Kramatorsk district with an FPV drone.
In the Zolochiv community of the Kharkiv region, a Russian drone attacked the Hryhorii Skovoroda National Literary and Memorial Museum.
