A suspect in a case of treason and an attempted terrorist attack was detained in the Mykolaiv region
In the Mykolaiv region, law enforcement officers detained a 28-year-old local resident who has been notified that he is suspected of treason and a completed attempt to commit a terrorist act. According to the investigation, the man was recruited by a representative of the Russian Federation, an aggressor state, and agreed to carry out tasks in exchange for monetary compensation.
According to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense in the Southern Region, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and the State Border Guard Service, the suspect was recruited via Telegram channels in May 2026. The SBU noted that he is a conscript from the Bashtanka district who deserted his military unit.
According to investigators, the man registered Starlink satellite communication terminals three times in the names of relatives and acquaintances with drug addictions. He then passed the registration details to a representative of the Russian intelligence service.
Additionally, according to the SBU, the suspect received the coordinates of a hideout, retrieved a homemade explosive device from there, and attempted to covertly place it under a Ukrainian soldier’s vehicle. Law enforcement officials stated that they thwarted the terrorist attack and detained the man immediately after he planted the device.
The man is charged with high treason under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and with a completed attempt to commit a terrorist act under Part 2 of Article 15 and Part 1 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. According to the SBU, he is being held in custody without the right to bail. The security service noted that he could face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
