In the Zhytomyr region, a soldier will stand trial for running a Viber group for draft dodgers

In the Zhytomyr region, an indictment has been filed against a military servicemember suspected of obstructing the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations during a state of emergency.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the case involves the creation and operation of a Viber group that may have been used to facilitate evasion of mobilization. The indictment against the servicemember was filed by prosecutors from the Zhytomyr Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense Affairs in the Central Region.

It has been established that in April 2026, the servicemember, who had previously left his military unit without authorization, created a themed community on the “Viber” messaging app and became its administrator with the aim of helping men of draft age evade military service and mobilization.

He ensured the community’s continuous operation and disseminated information about the locations where TCC and SP personnel were conducting mobilization activities in the Zhytomyr region.

The information he disseminated corresponded to the actual locations of TCC and SP personnel on the relevant dates and times. This allowed community members—including those subject to military service—to learn in a timely manner about the locations of mobilization announcements and avoid them in order to evade mobilization measures.

In addition, community members could also send relevant information in real time.

Thus, by organizing the community’s activities and disseminating information about the locations of mobilization events, the defendant obstructed the lawful activities of the TCC and SP military personnel.

The military servicemember faces a sentence of imprisonment for a term of five to eight years.

The pretrial investigation and operational support were conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine in Zhytomyr Oblast.
