North Korean soldiers captured while fighting for Russia want to go to South Korea — Yonhap
Ukrainian forces captured two North Korean soldiers who were fighting on Russia’s side against the Ukrainian Defense Forces, reports Yonhap.
The prisoners stated that they were sent to the front after serving in their own army and had no choice but to participate in the war. According to them, North Korean leadership presented the war in Ukraine as an “international duty” to Russia.
The captured Koreans said they crossed the Russian border and entered the combat zone through military channels under North Korean command. They claimed that at first, they did not understand the real situation or the scale of the Russian invasion.
Once on the front lines, the soldiers faced harsh conditions, insufficient supplies, and total dependence on Russian officers.
One of the prisoners noted that combat missions were often “deadly” and did not account for personnel losses. He said the Russian command treated North Korean soldiers as “expendable.” According to him, North Korean troops were sent to the most dangerous positions without adequate preparation or support.
Previously, South Korea stated it does not plan to recognize North Korea as a separate state. It was also reported that North Korea secretly deployed a missile base near the Chinese border.
