Air defense forces shot down 97 Russian drones overnight
Starting on the evening of August 22, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with 127 attack drones. Air defense forces shot down 97 of them, but 27 drones were confirmed to have struck 22 locations.
According to military sources, the Russians launched the attack at 6:00 p.m. on August 22. They used 127 drones in the strike, including Shahed drones—some of which were jet-powered—as well as “Gerbera” drones and “Parody” decoy drones. The drones were launched from Russian territory—specifically from the Kursk, Millerovo, Orel, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions. The enemy also launched drones from the temporarily occupied cities of Donetsk and Crimea.
The Russian attack was repelled by the Ukrainian Air Force, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. According to preliminary data, as of 9:00 a.m. on August 23, air defense forces had shot down or neutralized 97 enemy drones. They were neutralized in the north, south, and east of Ukraine.
At the same time, it was not possible to completely avoid the consequences of the attack. The Air Force recorded 27 strike UAVs hitting 22 locations. Debris from downed Russian drones was also found at three other locations. “The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces,” the Air Force reported.
At the time this report was published, the attack was still ongoing. Several Russian drones remained in Ukrainian airspace. Thus, the Russian army deployed 127 drones of various types in a single night, and Ukrainian air defense and other units of the Defense Forces neutralized most of them. This was reported on the morning of August 23 by the command of the Ukrainian Air Force.
Over the past day, the Russian army lost another 1,310 soldiers in the war against Ukraine. Ukrainian forces also destroyed one Russian aircraft, 26 armored combat vehicles, 69 artillery systems, and nearly 2,000 drones.
Over the past day, on August 22, there were 254 clashes between Ukrainian and Russian forces on the front lines. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk sectors.
