Russia has attacked Ukrainian media outlets at least 87 times, according to the IMI

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has carried out at least 87 attacks on Ukrainian media outlets. As a result of the shelling, newsrooms were damaged or completely destroyed. Some media outlets have been targeted by Russian attacks multiple times.

The geography of Russian strikes spans 13 regions of Ukraine, indicating a systematic nature of the pressure on Ukraine’s information infrastructure.

The highest number of cases of damage and destruction of newsrooms was recorded in Kyiv and the Kyiv region—19 attacks. The Institute notes that a significant portion of these cases occurred in 2025–2026, when Russia significantly intensified its missile and drone attacks on the capital region.

Among other regions, the most affected were: Zaporizhzhia Oblast—11 cases, Sumy Oblast—10 cases, and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast—10 cases.

In the Kherson and Luhansk regions, newsrooms were mostly completely destroyed due to prolonged hostilities and the occupation of territories by Russian troops.

At the same time, in the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions, damage to newsrooms was more frequently reported as a result of regular Russian shelling.

By media type, online publications accounted for the most attacks—30 cases.

Television media also suffered significant losses—26 cases—as did print media—24 cases.

Radio stations were affected the least—5 cases—and other media formats—2 cases.

The IMI emphasizes that Russian attacks are aimed at undermining the work of Ukrainian media regardless of their format or region of operation.

“Overall, these figures indicate a deliberate Russian strategy to undermine the Ukrainian information landscape—regardless of media format or region. The destruction of newsrooms not only complicates the work of journalists but also limits citizens’ access to verified information, especially in frontline and temporarily occupied areas,” the IMI stated.

In addition to newsrooms, the Institute of Mass Information has documented at least 24 publicly known attacks on Ukrainian TV towers and television infrastructure facilities.

Strikes on civilian television broadcasting facilities were recorded in 12 regions of Ukraine.

The highest number of such incidents occurred in the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kherson regions.

Russian troops also struck television infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Donetsk, Luhansk, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, and Rivne regions.

Experts emphasize that such attacks are part of a large-scale Russian campaign aimed at destroying Ukraine’s information space and restricting citizens’ access to reliable information during the war.

This was reported by the Institute of Mass Information, which analyzed data collected by its network of regional representatives.
