Russia is preparing hundreds of electronic warfare systems to counter Starlink
Russian occupiers have begun preparations for the large-scale production of additional electronic warfare (EW) systems designed to counter Starlink satellite communications. This involves the production of another 300–400 such systems.
According to his information, Russian companies are already purchasing components to manufacture 300–400 EW systems, which are intended to be used against Starlink.
Beskrestnov estimates that a single such system can jam signals over an area ranging from 15 to 25 square kilometers.
According to the expert, Russian troops plan to use the new electronic warfare systems to protect critical infrastructure in the temporarily occupied territories from Ukrainian drones.
Starlink remains a critical component of Ukraine’s military infrastructure, as satellite communications are used, in particular, to ensure communication and the operation of unmanned systems.
The Russian military has already attempted to use electronic warfare (EW) systems to jam the Starlink signal. Now, according to Beskrestnov, Moscow intends to scale up these capabilities.
The increase in electronic warfare production indicates Russia’s intention to expand the scope of its countermeasures against satellite communications, Flash noted.
He said that Russian systems can be deployed both deep in the rear and near the front lines.
This would potentially allow the Russian military to create additional obstacles for Ukrainian drones and other systems that rely on satellite communications.
At the same time, the stated number of 300–400 systems is Beskrestnov’s estimate. There is currently no independent confirmation that Russia will actually be able to produce exactly that number of systems.
Flash also stated that Ukraine may use similar technologies against Russian satellite systems in the future.
Thus, Russia is attempting to expand the capabilities of its electronic warfare systems and create additional obstacles to the use of Starlink by the Ukrainian military and drone operators.
This was stated by Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to the President of Ukraine on the development of defense technologies, who goes by the call sign “Flash.”
Earlier, Russia announced the start of mass production of the “Volna Kupol Garant” electronic warfare system, which, according to Russian officials, is capable of disrupting Starlink satellite communications. At the same time, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) view these statements as part of Russia’s cognitive warfare campaign aimed at influencing U.S. decisions regarding Ukraine’s access to Starlink over Russian territory.
On August 31, Elon Musk announced his willingness to allow Ukrainian drones to use Starlink outside of Ukraine. According to the Financial Times, this specifically refers to the use of drones equipped with satellite communication terminals during operations on Russian territory; however, Musk set a specific condition.
