Russia has deployed more than 50 ships to Taman: the Navy explained the reason

Following strikes by the Ukrainian Defense Forces, Russia has moved more than 50 vessels to the Taman area in the Sea of Azov. At the same time, the new base does not guarantee their complete safety, said Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy.

According to him, the decision not to withdraw the ships from the Azov-Black Sea region is primarily political in nature. Despite the change in basing location, the Russian fleet, according to Pletenchuk’s assessment, cannot be certain of the safety of its vessels.

Commenting on reports that Russian ships had moved to the Taman coast following strikes by the Unmanned Systems Forces, Pletenchuk said: “Only time will tell how successful these calculations were... Perhaps they decided to help us save a little on our drones—why not?”

Regarding the escort boats accompanying Russian tankers, he noted: “As the events of the past day have shown, it seems they decided to repel the attacks directly with their own ships, and as a result, there is now one fewer second-class ship of this type.”

Pletenchuk reminded that the Kerch Strait remains blocked by the Russians, who have effectively built “gates” at the entrance and exit. Because of this, Russia considered the Sea of Azov relatively safe, counting on the fact that maritime drones would not be able to enter it unhindered.

The spokesperson also emphasized that Russia has the technical capability to withdraw its ships from the Azov-Black Sea region but is not doing so.

“The Russians have the ability to rescue their ships currently in the Black Sea. They have the ability to withdraw them from the waters of the Azov-Black Sea region, but nevertheless continue to remain in Novorossiysk, even though they no longer dare to leave that harbor. Let me remind you that the last two missile launches most likely took place directly from the harbor, which is, in principle, a security breach. Therefore, this decision is purely political. Technically, they do have that capability,” Pletenchuk stated.

This was stated on television by Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy.
