Russia is spreading a false claim about the alleged mass shooting down of Flamingo missiles

Russia is spreading a false claim about the alleged mass shooting down of Flamingo missiles

Claims that Russian air defense systems are allegedly shooting down 10 out of 11 Ukrainian Flamingo missiles are unsubstantiated and may be part of a Russian information and psychological operation.

Defense industry expert Anatoliy Khrapchynskyi emphasized that there is currently no reason to believe that Russian air defense systems are capable of intercepting most missiles of this type.

The Russian Ministry of Defense regularly reports on the alleged large-scale successes of its air defense systems. In July, Russia reported the destruction of 20 FP-5 Flamingo missiles, and another 25 in the first half of August. In total, the Russian side has claimed to have shot down at least 57 missiles since June.

At the same time, Ukraine does not disclose the number of Flamingo missiles used in strikes on Russian territory, but primarily reports on military targets that have been hit. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to verify the Russian statistics using publicly available data.

Individual reports claiming that “10 out of 11 were shot down” began circulating following a statement by an American military journalist. However, he himself acknowledged the inaccuracy of his calculations and noted that he was forced to rely solely on publicly available information.

Khrapchynskyi believes that such statements may be intended to discredit Ukrainian long-range missiles and create the impression of their alleged low effectiveness.

According to him, Russian air defense systems were designed primarily to counter threats from previous generations and may not necessarily be capable of effectively countering modern weapons.
